Sign Language on the iPhone

Sign Language on the iPhone

The hottest new iPhone App is the "Auslan Tutor" and a steal at just $50 for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. The best way to learn Auslan is by watching it - and trying it out - and now you can carry 500 of the most common signs in your pocket.

"With each new sign I wonder: what hair-cut Alex will have for this one?"
Bill Shorten MP, Disability Minister

"I carry Alex Jones in my pocket every day"
Senator Mitch Fifield, Coalition Disability Spokesman

"It is definitely more useful than Year 9 German was."
Nicholas Searle, Sydney.

An initiative of RIDBC , the portable video-based Australian Sign Language teaching resource was developed with Governement funds to assist families of young deaf children learn Auslan and promote and improve early communication between parent and child. Each sign has 5 corresponding entries which can be viewed on demand as often as necessary. The 5 entries are:

  • Handshape – a photo of the handshape used to form the sign
  • Single Sign – a video clip demonstrating the single sign
  • Phrase – a video clip of the sign used in a phrase
  • Sentence – a video clip of the phrase used in a sentence
  • Grammar – a text note about Auslan grammar that is pertinent to the sign, phrase, or sentence.
For more, go to your iTunes application and search the iTunes store for "Auslan Tutor". Our favourite sign is "celebrate".
